Garrett’s Law Health Information
In compliance with North Carolina’s Garrett’s Law, Wayne STEM Academy provides families with essential health education regarding Influenza, Meningococcal Meningitis, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV).
1. Influenza (The Flu)
A contagious respiratory illness spread primarily through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing.
Symptoms: Fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, sore throat, and cough.
Prevention: Annual vaccination is the best preventative method.
2. Meningococcal Meningitis
A rare but severe bacterial infection causing inflammation of the brain and spinal cord lining, spread via respiratory or saliva droplets.
Symptoms: Sudden high fever, severe headache, and stiff neck.
Protection: Safe and effective adolescent vaccines are available and recommended.
3. Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
A highly common virus spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact that can cause several types of cancer later in life.
Note: Often entirely asymptomatic. The vaccine is highly effective when given to adolescents.

Return to Learn Concussion Protocol
Total cognitive and physical rest. No school or screen time while symptomatic.
Partial days with frequent breaks. No testing or heavy cognitive workload.
Return to full classroom expectations once cleared by a physician.
